Jean Lemire's father, also named Jean Lemire, was a master carpenter in Quebec City, who built a steeple on the ground, which was hoisted to the top of the south section of the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Quebec, with the help of his sons. Years later this structure twice burned down and was rebuilt.
